nniversaries invite us to look back. But as we approach Albizu University’s 60th anniversary, I ask for something more. The moment invites us to remember why this institution was founded, to recognize the people who have carried its mission forward, and to decide what kind of university we must become. We celebrate 60 years of existence, during which we have carried Dr. Carlos Albizu’s vision and expanded our presence from Puerto Rico to the world. But more than that, we celebrate 60 years of unwavering commitment.
Throughout this edition of Albizu Magazine, board members and alumni reflect on this milestone. Their voices and insights highlight how Dr. Carlos Albizu founded this institution with a vision that was both ambitious and deeply human: that people should have access to appropriate behavioral and mental health care. That vision began in Puerto Rico, but it was never meant to stay limited by our physical footprint. Today, it continues to expand beyond our borders to every place where access to care can transform someone’s life. That founding principle remains our guide, because when we look at what is happening around the world, we see a profound need. And Albizu must continue to address those needs with compassion and the professional excellence our communities deserve.
“We celebrate 60 years of unwavering commitment”
We can’t do this work alone. Our history has been shaped by partners who have believed in our mission, including the federal government, the government of Puerto Rico, philanthropic foundations, private-sector partners, and individuals whose support has helped advance our work. In this edition of Albizu Magazine, we highlight some of those contributions by partners such as Fundación Carvajal, Fundación Triple S, the James & Barbara Cimino Foundation Inc., and Lord Construction Group, among many others. To them and our future partners, we reaffirm our commitment to expanding our reach, deepening our impact, and building an even stronger network of shared purpose.
For Albizu to be here today, we must also acknowledge the core and heart of our institution: our people. At the center of Albizu are our faculty, students, and employees. They are people who have made a deliberate choice to contribute to society by joining our mission. Many could have chosen paths that demanded less of them. Instead, they choose a place where service is at the center of every action. They all belong to a space that requires knowledge, discipline, empathy, and a willingness to stand with people in difficult moments. In many ways, our people are even willing to be invisible so that others can be seen. Their work may not always be public, but its impact is deeply visible in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
In that same spirit, my responsibility is to make sure our people have the resources they need to do their work, serve our communities, and make meaningful contributions to society. That is why we will continue to focus on sustainability, infrastructure, technology, and the student experience. These investments may not always be visible, but they matter. They create the conditions for students to learn, for faculty to teach, and for the institution to serve with ever-greater excellence.
“At the center of Albizu are our faculty, students, and employees”
I’m proud to say that today, Albizu is no longer being reactionary. We are working to be at the forefront of what comes next, preparing students beyond the classroom, supporting research, creating opportunities for professional exposure, and ensuring that faculty and students are not only participating in important conversations but helping shape them.
Looking into the future will also require Albizu to expand, both physically and academically. This growth, however, must never be disconnected from our original purpose. Growth matters only if it enables us to serve better. And here is where our commitment to vulnerable communities comes in, once again. We must continue supporting those who have been marginalized, including individuals and families affected by violence, isolation, and other circumstances that make access to care even more urgent. All our investments and plans must focus on providing care and improving the overall human experience. As we do so, Dr. Albizu’s vision remains our guiding force. Let us all remember that we are doing this work out of love. That is where I anchor myself. And that is where Albizu must continue to anchor itself as we begin our next chapter.
